Our guest is Jonathan D. Salant. He is an award winning journalist and the newly appointed assistant managing editor for politics at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Previously, Jonathan led the Washington bureau for NJ Advance Media which includes the Newark Star-Ledger and other papers. Prior to that role, he was a Washington-based reporter for Bloomberg and the Associated Press. 

Rachel, a rising college senior reached out to pose a career question. She’s long dreamt of becoming a reporter but is concerned that becoming one wouldn’t be a sustainable career move. Plus, her parents worry that she won’t earn enough to live on. She asks and Jonathan answers: how can journalism be my work fit?

Jonathan’s storied career happened as a result of years of hard work, but also by forming trust with elected officials who recognize his commitment to reporting the news with impartiality and fairness.

Jonathan D. Salant is a D.C. based veteran journalist who covers Capitol Hill and the White House for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Jonathan is a reporter’s reporter; he is a current member of the Standing Committee of Correspondents, former National Press Club president, former Regional Reporters Association president and former president of the D.C. chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.

He lives in (and often works remotely from) the Maryland suburbs of Washington, D.C.
